This past weekend we went camping with the cutest red-headed family in the world, our friends, Seth and Jill, and their daughter, Olivia, at the DeSoto Falls Campground in North Georgia, which is less than ten miles south of where we have camped a couple of times before at Vogel State Park. We had driven through the campground when up that way camping last fall, but since it was pouring rain and nearly flooded, it was hard to get a good take on the place. It is beautiful, though, and the sites are well spaced apart with a heavily leafed canopy, and many of the sites are located along Frogtown Creek, which is very pretty.
It was pouring rain on our drive up to the mountains Friday evening. We are beginning to think that it rains every time we put the rooftop carrier on the car. Thankfully it let up by the time we got to the campground, so we were able to keep relatively dry while setting up camp and getting Elsa down, which was nice. Jarrett and I stayed up for awhile and chatted and then headed to bed. As usual, I did not sleep so well that first night. This marked the first camping trip where we brought our air bed, and I cannot say I was really too fond of it. Whenever one of us moved, it moved the other person. I think next time we will stick with our sleeping pads. Elsa did fairly well, waking up just a few times, making a noise, and going back to sleep. There was one point when she apparently could not find her blankey (that might have been the second night) and she was quite upset until I could finally retrieve it and settle her down again.
We got up Saturday morning and made a pancake and bacon breakfast and then took a trip to a store to get firewood and more ice for the cooler. Here is Elsa in the coolest chair ever (borrowed from James), enjoying her breakfast all by herself. I highly recommend this highchair, which will hook to almost any table and collapses into about nothing, making it a cinch when it comes to packing. I will definitely want one of these if we have another child, and am even tempted to get one now for Elsa!
We also had a very special visit from the Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Seth and Jill met up with us at the campground around lunchtime, and we hung out for most of the afternoon just chatting and snacking. We all cooked dinner together and, after the girls went to bed, us adults built a campfire and stayed up chatting some more. A reunion of old friends was going on in the campsites surrounding us, so it was quite the ruckus well into the wee hours, but thankfully things eventually calmed down. We got some rain over the course of the day, but nothing to the extent of really risking ruining a good time.
It was pancakes and bacon again for breakfast on Sunday morning, and then we worked on breaking down camp. Elsa was very tempted by the road going through the campground, and it was clear she was understanding she should not go into it because she would go out in the street and then repeat our reprimand: "No go in street. Stay on rocks." (The driveways and campsites were composed of gravel, whereas the road was paved.) Still, she continued to test us to the point that I finally had to strap her in her car seat while we packed things up. It was then (after one of her multiple time-outs ended) that I realized she knows how to completely operate the iPad. She got a hold of it while sitting in the car, turned it on, unlocked it, touched the correct icon for one of her letter games, and started playing it. And then she knew which button to push to get back to the main screen and could scroll between screens and choose something else. Yikes. We have created (or are creating) a monster.
After the cars were packed, we headed to the front of the campground and parked in the main parking area for two hiking trails, one leading to the upper falls, and one to the lower. We hiked both, as in total they only equaled around 2.5 miles. Though relatively short and not too terribly strenuous, it was still just nice to get out in the woods with friends. We will definitely be back.
To end, here is a photo of Elsa attempting to hug Olivia. So cute.
